How to Clean and Store Your Jewellery at Home

The right cleaning and storage methods for gold, diamonds, pearls and coloured stones.

Jewellery meets our skin, creams, perfume and humidity in the air every day. This build-up gradually reduces shine and the ability of stones to reflect light. Fortunately, with correct and regular care, jewellery can stay like new for years. Here is a simple guide you can follow at home.

For gold and platinum

Add a few drops of neutral washing-up liquid to a bowl of lukewarm water and soak the piece for 15 to 20 minutes. Gently brush the back of the stone and curved surfaces with a soft children's toothbrush, then rinse well in lukewarm water and dry with a lint-free cloth. Do not use abrasive toothpaste or bleach; bleach gradually damages gold alloys.

For diamonds

A diamond attracts oil and cream, and the thin film on it quickly lowers its sparkle. The method above works for diamond rings too. Cleaning once a month and a setting check once a year prevent damage. If you think a prong has loosened, stop wearing the ring and bring it to us: prong repair is free.

Pearls and organic gems

Pearl, coral and amber are affected by water, perfume and acid. Wipe only with a damp soft cloth and store once completely dry. Store a pearl necklace lying flat rather than hanging; this prevents the thread from stretching.

Coloured stones

Sapphires and rubies are hard stones and can be cleaned with lukewarm soapy water. Emeralds, which may be filled, cannot withstand ultrasonic cleaning or hot water; wipe them only with a damp cloth.

Storage

Store each piece in its own pouch or compartment; a diamond can scratch other stones. Lay chains with their clasps closed so they do not tangle. Moisture-absorbing silica gel packets help silver and pearls.

When to take it off

Remove jewellery during showers, in the pool or sea, during sport, housecleaning and cooking. Chlorine harms gold alloys and the rhodium plating of white gold.

Professional care

Visit one of our boutiques once a year; we do ultrasonic cleaning, steaming, polishing and a setting check free of charge. So that you do not forget the date on your care card, we can send you an SMS reminder if you wish.

What should a jewellery box be like?

A compartmented box lined with velvet or suede prevents scratching. Keep the box away from damp places such as the bathroom; moisture causes tarnishing especially on silver and pearls. When travelling put each piece in a separate pouch and carry chains flat with their clasps closed.

Order of perfume and cream

Always put jewellery on after perfume, hairspray and cream; contact with and build-up of chemicals harms both shine and the rhodium plating.
